Father's Day History

Sonora Smart Dodd, raised by her father, thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.  Her father, Henry Jackson Smart, birthday was June 19th.  So the third Sunday of June was proclaimed Father's Day.

The first Father's Day celebration was actually in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.  Although Father's Day had been celebrated for years, it wasn't till 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.  Prior to that, in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge had supported Father's Day being a national celebration.  The Father's Day flower is roses: red roses to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.
